In Burmese high schools, students experience a rigid curriculum with a lack of a career guidance program. Consequently, a large number of Burmese high school graduates fail to make informed decisions about their future education and career choice. Their decisions, which should be aligned with their interests, capacities, future goals, are instead often heavily influenced by their matriculation exam scores.
Project Myanmar ‘17 (Yangon) aims to work with two groups of people: soon-to-graduate high school students in Yangon, Myanmar and Burmese high school or university students. With the first group, we hope to help the students explore their own interests and aspiration while getting exposure to a broad spectrum of higher education/ training/ future career prospects that are available to them after their graduation.
As for the local high schools and universities students in Myanmar, we aim to empower them to bring out their inner potential. We hope the students will utilize this project as a platform where they can learn and experience leadership and interpersonal skills not just theoretically, but from hands-on experience. We are looking to provide close guidance and extensive training to the mentees with the help of the mentors who will be carefully selected from diverse backgrounds. Through approaches such as leadership workshops, community outreach, and mentorship, we hope to provide the mentees a space to challenge themselves, build their capacity, and have the courage and confidence to step up and advocate for a cause they believe in.
By the end of the project, we hope that our target groups of students can have a better idea of what they want and what they are capable of for their future. At the same time, this project will also enable us as members of the project to understand ourselves—our own goals and vision for our future—better.
